WONDERFUL LONDON in 1924 & 2014

In 1924, Harry B. Parkinson and Frank Miller documented London in a fantastic series of short films, known as "Wonderful London". Over the last few months, I have stood in their foot-steps, recapturing their shots exactly, and have blended the two together creating a window through time.

Parkinson and Miller filmed 20 shorts, each of around 10 minutes, and 12 of these are collected together by the BFI under "Wonderful London". Their titles included ... "Barging Through London", "Cosmopolitan London", "London's Sundays", "Flowers of London", "London's Free Shows", "London Off The Track", "Dicken's London", "London's Outer Ring", "London Old and New", "London's Contrasts", "Known London", and "Along Father Thames to Shepperton".

To make my film, I had to separate theirs into a set of stills, load them onto my phone, and go hunting around London. If you're interested, I've included some of these stills below, but it really is worth getting the DVD from the BFI to watch the original shorts ...

Making this short follows my previous film “London in 1927 and 2013” tracing the footsteps of Claude Friese-Greene. It can be seen here ...

WEDDING TIMELAPSE

I didn't want to ask any of my friends to film my wedding for me, knowing how much of a drag the responsibility is, the boring edit process, and the fact that very few people will ever watch it, so instead I set up a time-lapse in the church.

Thanks to all our family and friends for making it such a special day.

LONDON LEISURE PIRATES

The most photogenic of East London party-makers, the London Leisure Pirates, formerly of the Fox and Cutlass and soon to be campaigning for people to Be Nice, have given me plenty of excuses to play with my camera. I've collected their projects here, and hope to continue adding to them ... http://www.londonleisurepirates.com

COMICS vs.

I was always a fan of pop-culture that mixed two different sets of unconnected characters and used the word "vs." to justify their meeting. For a month I tried to create a daily comic strip that would set two irrelevant subjects against one another, often using wordplay or themes.

LONDON in 1927 & 2013

During the 1920s, cinematographer Claude Friese-Greene travelled across the UK with his new colour film camera. His trip ended in London, with some of his most stunning images, and these were recently revived and restored by the BFI, and shared across social media and video websites.

Over the past 6 months, I have attempted to capture every one of his shots, standing in his footsteps, and using modern equivalents of his camera and lenses. This has been a personal study, that has revealed how little London has changed.

UPDATE: Thank-you to everyone who watched and shared this video. In the space of a couple of weeks it spread virally on Twitter and Facebook, and on one day in January was watched just shy of 200,000 times. It was featured in many blogs, buzz feed turned it into GIFS, and The Daily Mail ran a brilliantly researched piece where they referred to my cameo as "a woman from the present day". The highlight came when Jeremy Paxman introduced it, before it was broadcast nationally at the end of NewsNight.

OUROBOROS

The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. The Ouroboros often symbolize self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things such as the phoenix which operate in cycles that begin anew as soon as they end. It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. While first emerging in Ancient Egypt, the Ouroboros has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist's opus. It is also often associated with Gnosticism, and Hermeticism. mrsimonsmith.co.uk art-war-entertainment.com WRITER & DIRECTOR - SIMON SMITH FEATURING - MY BAD SISTER CINEMATOGRAPHY - STEVE CORNACCHIA PRODUCTION MANAGER - FLISS CRUICKSHANK PRODUCERS - MIKE KOVACS & ALEX LEACH EXEC PRODUCERS - EMEKA ENE & ED FEILDEN
